Where the data comes from

Every provider record is built from the NPPES Data Dissemination file, the FOIA-disclosable extract of the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System published each month by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The release currently loaded is dated August 10, 2026.

Quality measures and star ratings, where shown, come from CMS Care Compare. Geographic coordinates are derived from ZIP-code centroids published by GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). Specialty names follow the Health Care Provider Taxonomy code set maintained by the National Uniform Claim Committee.

How often it is updated

The full file is reloaded monthly and the weekly incremental files are applied in between, so a new or updated NPI normally appears here within a week of CMS publishing it.

What an NPI listing does not tell you

An NPI is an identifier, not a credential. CMS states plainly that issuance of an NPI does not confirm that a provider is licensed or credentialed. Providers self-report their addresses and specialties, and some records are years out of date. Always confirm with the provider before relying on anything you read here.

Corrections

Provider details can only be corrected at the source. Providers can update their own record through the NPPES system at nppes.cms.hhs.gov; the change flows into this directory at the next refresh.

Correcting a listing does not need an email. The report link on the provider's own page reaches us with the record already attached, which is faster than describing it. And if a listing shows what is actually a private home address, say so — we will suppress it while the correction works its way through NPPES.
